Thank you, Nacogdoches

Nacogdoches shoppers heard the message to “Shop Nac First” in the early part of the Christmas shopping period.

November retail sales were strong. Figures for December will be released later this week (Feb. 13).

Here’s a report from the Daily Sentinel’s Matthew Stoff:

State Comptroller Susan Combs released the latest figures in early January, representing sales that occurred in November.  Sales that month in the city of Nacogdoches generated $456,807 for the city, a 9.8 percent over the same period the year before. The county received $464,917 overall, an increase of 7.1 percent over November, 2007.

Nacogdoches Mayor Roger Van Horn released a statement thanking citizens for supporting local business. “We were pleased to learn sales tax was up 10 percent for January. We are grateful to our merchants and citizens who support our local economy,” the statement said.

Bill King, president and CEO of the Nacogdoches Economic Development Corp. (NEDCO) said that Texas as a whole is doing better than the rest of the country.  Combs reported $1.86 billion in collected revenue during the period, a 2 percent increase over the same time in 2007. She said sales tax collections have slowed from previous years but have still grown 3.9 percent in the first four months of fiscal year 2009.
